Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - July 18, 2010

The political shows were busy on Sunday, with Indiana Republican Mike Pence misleading Fox News Sunday viewers about the Recovery Act and Sen. Cornyn misrepresenting the origins of the federal deficit on Meet the Press. Sen. McConnell told State of the Union viewers a flagrant lie about the Obama administration's response to the Gulf oil spill, and exaggerated the number of small businesses that benefit from the Bush tax cuts for the rich. Elsewhere, NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions described the Tea Party as "one-third Democrat, one-third Republican" on Meet the Press despite clear evidence that Tea Party activists are overwhelmingly Republican. On Face the Nation, the task of defending Arizona's immigration law fell this week to former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who offered no new evidence to support his conviction that SB 1070 will not lead to ethnic profiling.

Kobach In Farmers Branch, TX

Kris Kobach, Republican candidate for Kansas Secretary of State and active anti-immigrant lawyer, has helped craft legislation for the local government in Farmers Branch, Texas to put rental restrictions on illegal immigrants. His legislation has twice been judged unconstitutional and has thus far cost $4 million in legal fees, $100,000 of which have been pocketed by Kobach.

Rep. Carter Joins The Liar's Chorus Of Arizona Apologists

Last night on the House floor, Rep. John Carter (R-TX) defended Arizona's notorious new immigration law by claiming that it reflects federal law "word for word." In fact, the Arizona law includes enforcement policy that doesn't exist at the federal level. Carter's second talking point — that the bill completely prohibits racial profiling by requiring a "lawful stop" — is just as hackneyed and just as false. Proponents of the law admit that they would use the clothing, accent and appearance of someone lawfully stopped (say, for speeding) to form a "reasonable suspicion" and demand a person's immigration papers.

Rep. Poe Repeats Falsehood That Kagan "Banned" The Military From Harvard's Campus

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) argued against Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's confirmation, claiming that she "banned" the military from Harvard's campus for "personal and biased reasons."  In reality, Kagan upheld longstanding university policy, facilitated military recruitment through the law school's Veterans Association, and complied with court rulings.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - June 6, 2010

Sunday on ABC's This Week, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn defended his candidate for Barack Obama's former Senate seat and argued in favor of Israel's blockade of Gaza. Sen. Cornyn glossed over Senate candidate Mark Kirk's history of exaggerating his Navy career, calling it a "misunderstanding." According to the Texas Republican, Israel would have allowed humanitarian goods into Gaza after inspecting the relief flotilla -- but in reality, Israel is barring a wide variety of humanitarian items from entering Gaza. Meanwhile, on Fox News Sunday, Mississippi governor Haley Barbour complained about media coverage of the Gulf oil disaster and downplayed its severity.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - May 23, 2010

On Sunday, Kentucky Republican Rand Paul's position on civil rights legislation dominated the political shows despite Paul's decision to bail on Meet the Press. Sarah Palin pushed the false notion that Paul was tricked by journalists, and Sen. John Cornyn downplayed the whole affair as a "stumble." But in reality Paul has consistently stated a sincere, controversial position. Elsewhere, Palin and Michael Steele leveled false attacks at the Obama administration's response to the oil spill in the gulf. The GOP leaders each charged that the government response has been slow. The fact is that the administration was involved from the morning after the explosion.

Rep. Lamar Smith Says "DREAM Act Is A Nightmare"

In an op-ed in The Hill, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) attempted to mislead readers about the DREAM Act.  While Smith tries to paint the legislation as a new kind of amnesty, in reality the DREAM Act allows the children of immigrants to earn legal residency if they have not been arrested and are attending college or are enlisted in the armed services.
