Rep. Burton Overstates Cost Of Clean Energy By 5000%
Last night on the House floor, Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) lied about the cost of Democrats' proposals for clean energy legislation. According to Burton, a cap-and-trade policy would "cost every family in this country about $4,000 more for utility bills." Burton is off by a factor of 50; according to estimates, the legislation passed in the House would add about $83 per year to family energy costs, or 23 cents per day. The Senate proposal would cost families $146 per year at worst, and might actually reduce family costs by $35 per year.

NRSC Site "The Real Harry Reid" Full Of Unreal Statements
In an obvious and uncreative comeback to the "Real Sharron Angle" website published by the campaign of Senator Harry Reid, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has published a site called "The Real Harry Reid." However clever the NRSC thinks it is, the information on the new site is inaccurate and misleading on Sen. Reid's plan for energy and jobs in Nevada.

Ad Check: Rob Portman Lies About Democrats' Clean Energy Proposals
Former Rep. Rob Portman, the current GOP candidate for Senate in Ohio, is lying about Democrat-sponsored clean energy policy in a new ad. The ad parrots the main Republican talking point on energy policy: that any effort to put a price on pollution amounts to a job-killing national tax on anyone who flips a light switch. In fact, House Democrats passed a bill last year that would create millions of jobs and cost families "less than a postage stamp a day," and the American Power Act pending in the Senate would hold polluters accountable and start reducing our dependence on foreign oil. On top of Portman's lies, his ad asks voters to read his energy proposal. Unfortunately for Ohioans, the "Portman Plan on Energy" is based on bad science and full of bad policy.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows — June 27, 2010
On Sunday's political talk shows, Republicans were hard at work managing expectations for this week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the Elena Kagan nomination. Senators Cornyn (TX), Graham (SC) and McCain (AZ) each pushed the false notion that Kagan banned military recruiters from Harvard Law School while she was Dean there. A number of Kagan's former students have defended her against such charges, and the fact is recruiters had access to the Harvard campus and Harvard Law students throughout Kagan's tenure. Elsewhere, Sen. Graham raised the red herring of Kagan's praise for an Israeli judge as a reason to oppose her nomination, and Sen. Cornyn reiterated the tired Republican lie that clean energy legislation will kill jobs.

Fact Checking the Sunday Shows — June 20, 2010
On Sunday, Republicans struggled to deflect attention from Rep. Joe Barton's (R-TX) ridiculous apology to BP. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) ludicrously suggested that President Obama has taken so much money from BP that he is more likely than the GOP to side with Big Oil — which has given Republicans $188 million since 1990. McConnell and Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) each claimed that Barton's comments are not the Republican position, but the 114-member Republican Study Committee has expressed similar concerns. Elsewhere, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) proved that she doesn't understand the basics of cap-and-trade by calling that system of economic incentives a "command-and-control type of system."

Rep. Scalise Spills False GOP Talking Points
During an appearance on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) went up against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz (D-FL) to discuss the energy bill. When challenged on the legislation, instead of offering real solutions that address the problems we face, Scalise spewed the standard GOP talking points that were developed to prevent Americans from achieving energy independence.

Rep. Akin: Just Plain Wrong On Stimulus, Job Creation
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) took to the House floor on Wednesday night to argue that the Democratic Party and President Obama are turning the current recession into another Great Depression. Akin claimed that the Recovery Act has failed, that any and all good news about the economy is part of a bubble created by the Federal Reserve and that Democratic legislation to address climate change will tax anyone who touches a light switch. The facts show that the Missouri Republican is wrong on all three counts.

BP And Goldman Sachs: Gambling With Your Money
Just like Goldman Sachs, BP acted irresponsibly by recklessly pursuing profits at the expense of the American people. Both companies gambled, both companies lost, and both companies expect the taxpayer to clean up their mess. It's time both companies are held accountable.
